These step by step workshops help students build their drawing and watercolour painting skills, and think about storytelling in their art. Some topics involve observational drawing from life, and many involve drawing from the imagination while employing techniques such as simple shapes and construction lines.

These workshops are run by an illustrator Charlotte Dennis. You can view Charlotte’s works here https://www.instagram.com/charlottedennis_art/

How to draw faces

MON 6 July 1 – 4PM
TUE 14 July 9AM – 12PM
MON 20 July 9AM – 12PM

Drawing faces can be so much fun. In this workshop you can draw your own face (a self-portrait), a friend’s face, or an imaginary character’s face! We will learn about using basic shapes to draw the head, and measuring techniques for accurately placing the facial features. We will also cover watercolour application and layering, and colour mixing. Finally, we think about including details such as accessories to tell a story about the person in the portrait.

How to draw animals

TUE 7 July 9AM – 12PM
WED 15 July 1 – 4PM

In this workshop we will use reference photos and simple shapes to draw interesting birds and cats. We will learn about watercolour application and colour mixing. Observing photos (or maybe one of the animals in our garden), and using our imagination, we will think about pattern and detail to add for the fur and feathers of our unique animals.

How to draw poses

WED 8 JUL 1 – 4PM

This workshop is all about drawing people. We will learn a technique for drawing the standing human body starting with a simplified skeleton, and adding the flesh onto it. We will apply that knowledge to draw a person in a seated position. We will cover details of drawing clothing, such as fabric weight and the effects of breeze or movement. We will also learn about watercolour application and layering, and colour mixing, to add the finishing touches to our characters.

How to draw scenery

FRI 17 July 1 – 4PM

In this workshop we will each paint a landscape. We will learn about using comparative size to show perspective, and drawing plantlife. We will focus on creating variety in our scenes by using different shapes and textures. We will also cover watercolour application and layering, and colour mixing. If you love drawing nature, this would be a great workshop for you!
